Chemult Rural Fire District responds to two different types of calls.  Fire calls inside the Fire District boarder's and EMS calls in a 1450 sq mile area.  EMS is the primary area of calls that cover from Silver Lake Hwy mile marker 35 to US 97, 97 south Milepost 228 US 97 to Hwy 58 Milepost 194,  Hwy 138 to mile marker 87 and Hwy 58 to mile marker 77.  Chemult Rural Fire Protection District was originally started in the 1950's.  There was a group of locals that started the ambulance service with a  1962 Cadillac.  There are now 3 Ambulance's that can repond to calls for both BLS, and ALS.  The EMS part works with Crater Lake National Park for Medical response as well as Douglas County and Jackson County for Hwy 138 and Hwy 230.

We have a One Paramedic, One Intermediate, One EMT, Two EMR's, and 2 Drivers .  The need for more EMS personal is great with such a large Ambulance Service Area that include major highways and rail system. There is a housing area outside the Fire District Borders at Scott Mountain and Sand Creek.  These area's pay by billing insurance and do not pay District Taxes.  Both Crescent RFPD and Chiloquin RFPD respond with Mutual Aid. Ambulance Bills and Air Transports can be expensive.  Air Transport can cost as much as $100,000 dollars, check insurance below. Tansport is done by Ground Ambulance or by Air Ambulance.  Air Link does most of our transports but Life Flight and Mercy Air may be called.

Fire Response works with Walker Range Fire Patrol Associates along Hwy 58 to Walker Mountain Rd US 97.  Fremont-Winema National Forest, ODF, and Chiloquin RFPD are partners in the South.  Three major Highways fall within the Fire District response area.  There is a major Railroad that transports Freight, and Amtrack.  Crescent RFPD and High Cascade Fire District respond with mutual aid.

The original Volunteer Fire District operated without a tax base until a Fire broke out in town in 1952 which made the population aware of  the need for a new official Fire District.   A new tax based volunteer fire department was formed in the 1950's, original board members were "Jack Grant, Bill Taylor, Dick Jessup and Bob Haynes. It was funded with taxes and donations. The department has continued to grow over the years and has its current building at the northwest end of Chemult.

The current Tax Base is about $224,000 and the Ambulance income help fund the District.  Grants help to fund extra needs in wages, training and equipment purchases.   The distance between the station's is a major factor.  There is 17 miles from the 2 Rivers Station to the Main Station.  There is a 10 mile distance from the Main Station to the south end of the District boarder at Hwy 138.  Station 2 at Beaver Marsh is about 7 miles from the Main Station.  Chemult is a gateway to Ski resorts at Willamette Pass, and Diamond Lake.  There are a large number of OHV trails in the north area of the District.  ATV's and off road Motorcyles are very active in the late spring to late fall.  Snowmobiles and cross county skiing are sports in the winter.  The hiking trails at Pacific Crest , Miller Lake to Maidu Lake, Thielsen Creek Loop to Howlock Mountain,  bring calls for Search and Rescue.  Fishing at the  multiple  Campgrounds around the area include Miller Lake, and Forest Service Roads are part of the EMS Service Area.

There is a huge need for Volunteers for Fire, EMS, Grant Writing, Maintenance, and Public support for many other parts of the District.
